Day 8: Sacred Valley: Pisaq - Inkariy - Ollantaytambo (B/L)
The day starts very early. We will go to the Incas Sacred Valley. We will find the village of Pisaq 2,950 m | 9,678 ft. We can go up to visit one of the main Inca architectural complexes. The archaeological site of Pisac, located in the hills of the village, dominates the valley from the south, offering a spectacular view. Its sophisticated system of platforms (agricultural terraces) allows us to understand the importance of agriculture in the Andes and the technology used in the Inca Empire. We will then visit the handicraft market of Pisac.
We will continue our trip following the course of the Urubamba River, and we will stop at the Inkariy Museum on the way to Ollantaytambo, it’s a museum that brings the history of Peru to life and is not just a cliché phrase. Inkariy Museum is a must-see for its comprehensive and colorful presentation of pre-Hispanic cultures in a way that is easy to assimilate. Here, the history of Peru is vividly brought to life. Our recommendation is to have lunch here as well, it is a homemade lunch prepared by the mother of the owners of the museum (not included).
The ruins of Ollantaytambo are beautiful and are surrounded by mountain ranges, the vastness of the valley, the river, and the village of cobbled streets with houses and tiled roofs. The set is endearing. If we have enough time, depending on how much time we spent at the museum, we will visit the fortress and citadel, built to guard the entrance to this part of the valley and protect it from enemies. Walk the streets of the town to have a clear idea about how was this military, religious and cultural centre during the Inca Empire.
